Sophia Bounou is a French-Moroccan artist whose vibrant, instinctive paintings transform the people, relationships and experiences surrounding her into densely layered visual worlds. Drawing inspiration from Pablo Picasso, Amedeo Modigliani, Tim Burton and Joan Miró, Bounou has developed a distinctive language of abstracted figures, interlocking forms, expressive line, colour and pattern. Working primarily with acrylic pens and paint, she combines vivid hues, shifting tones and intricate motifs to create compositions that are at once spontaneous and carefully interconnected.
At the heart of Bounou's practice is an exploration of love and intimacy. Her paintings capture love loudly and boldly, expressed through abstracted figures, intertwined limbs and bodies that appear to embrace, overlap and move through one another without inhibition.
