This beautiful work represents the Greene Street Mural, a site-specific and temporary mural painting that Lichtenstein created at the Galleria Castelli in via Greene 142 in December 1983 and which was destroyed after 6 months of performance following the indications of Lichtenstein.
In Greene Street Mural, Lichtenstein has stratified images from his pop lexicon with new motifs, recalling the self-reflexive and historical-artistic juxtapositions of the artist's studio paintings made in the same period. The mural merges the citations of the work of Lichtenstein with references to Picasso and Brancusi, Art Deco motifs and depictions of the Great Pyramids. This mix embodies Lichtenstein's ability to absorb everything that has attracted his attention and his constantly evolving artistic language.
