Andy Goldsworthy BRITISH, b. 1956
Andy Goldsworthy makes sculptures from materials such as snow, twigs, grass, stones, and clay as he blurs the boundaries between sculpture, architecture, and nature. The artist situates his works within both rural and urban environments, drawing on the land art traditions of artists such as Robert Smithson. Goldsworthyâs sculptures embrace a precise, elegant geometric formalismâat first. As nature takes its course, they begin to decay or otherwise change. Only photographs and drawings preserve the ephemeral original works. Goldsworthy studied at the Bradford School of Art and Preston Polytechnic and has produced work all over the world. He has executed commissions at institutions including the J. Paul Getty Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Tate Liverpool, the Museum of Jewish Heritage, the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego, and Storm King Art Center.
