Brendan Lynch AMERICAN, b. 1953

Brendan Lynch is a member of the Brooklyn-based organization The Still House Group. Working across a range of mediums, Lynch is particularly focused on material abstractions in graphite and aluminum on wood, tie-dyed canvases, and drawings and spray paintings directly on gallery walls. Often employing unusual materials, the artist has used objects ranging from like surf wax to cigarette ash, sanded paint dust, potato chips, and toenail clippings.

Lynch’s artworks are like jigsaw puzzles, in which each collected material finds its place. He creates narratives by juxtaposing and interlacing a variety of disciplines, practices, cultures and contexts. His artistic practice evolved from a dialogue between the aesthetics of Culture with a capital C and a more common, mainstream culture. Influenced by the explosion of everyday visuals in Los Angeles – from graffiti to cartoons, comics and commodity products – he creates works that challenge what many people in the elite gallery circuit would judge as significant and valuable.

Lynch was born in Los Angeles in 1984, and currently lives and works in Brooklyn, NY. He received his B.F.A. at the Education School of Visual Arts in 2009, and his M.F.A. at the School of Visual Arts in 2011.
