We are delighted to share a selection of our latest arrivals by the incredibly talented Sophia Bounou.
Sophia Bounou is a French-Moroccan artist whose vibrant, instinctive paintings transform the people, relationships and experiences surrounding her into densely layered visual worlds. Drawing inspiration from Pablo Picasso, Amedeo Modigliani, Tim Burton and Joan Miró, Bounou has developed a distinctive language of abstracted figures, interlocking forms, expressive line, colour and pattern. Working primarily with acrylic pens and paint, she combines vivid hues, shifting tones and intricate motifs to create compositions that are at once spontaneous and carefully interconnected.
At the heart of Bounou's practice is an exploration of love and intimacy. Her paintings capture love loudly and boldly, expressed through abstracted figures, intertwined limbs and bodies that appear to embrace, overlap and move through one another without inhibition. Romantic relationships sit alongside friendship and community, reflecting Bounou's fascination with the many different forms that human connection can take. Rather than presenting these relationships literally, she translates their energy and emotion into an unapologetically expressive visual language.
