Jeffrey Rothstein American, b. 1960
Jeffrey Eric Rothstein is an American visual artist whose multidisciplinary practice explores perception, memory, and the mutable relationship between landscape, abstraction, and the photographic image. Working across photography, painting, and digital image-making, his work occupies the space between observation and invention, where images become less descriptive than experiential. Over the course of four decades, Rothstein has developed a practice that moves fluidly between photography, painting, digital construction, and installation, challenging conventional distinctions between artistic mediums.
For more than a decade, Rothstein has returned repeatedly to the American Southwest, developing bodies of work informed by both the physical landscape and the philosophical traditions of Chinese Tang and Song Dynasty landscape painting. Rather than documenting place, his work considers landscape as a psychological and contemplative experience-one shaped as much by memory, atmosphere, and time as by geography. Alongside these investigations, his abstract works continue an exploration of geometry, colour, and visual perception, dissolving the boundaries between photography and painting.
Rothstein studied photography at Hampshire College before attending the Whitney Museum Independent Study Program, where he worked alongside Richard Serra and Brice Marden. Early in his career he assisted Richard Avedon, an experience that profoundly influenced his understanding of image-making and visual discipline.
His work has been exhibited internationally and is held in public, corporate, and private collections, including the Howard Hughes Foundation, and The Tarn Collection. His large-scale commissions have been realized for museums, leading hospitality groups, architectural practices, and significant private collections throughout the United States.
Born in Northampton, Massachusetts, Rothstein spent part of his childhood sailing throughout the Caribbean before attending school in London. He lives and works between New York City and Lincoln, Nebraska, and is represented by Blond Contemporary.
